Three Arrested in Haveri for Assaulting Family Over Loan Repayment Dispute

Haveri police on Friday arrested three men in connection with an alleged assault on a family over a loan repayment dispute, which left one family member injured. Authorities are continuing the investigation to identify and apprehend additional suspects involved in the incident.

The accused have been identified as Yogesh Sunagar, 27, Manoj Sunagar, 28, and Devaraj Taravanda, 26, all residents of Bommanahalli. The case was registered following a complaint by 62-year-old Jainulasab Babusab Tumbaragi, who stated that his family was attacked while having dinner late on November 25.

In his complaint, Tumbaragi detailed that six men barged into his home at around 9:00 pm, confronting the family over an outstanding loan repayment. He said that Yogesh Sunagar assaulted his son, Gausamoddin Bakshusa, with a sickle, causing injuries to his hand. The injured family member was rushed to the hospital, where he is receiving treatment. Tumbaragi further mentioned that the attackers forced the family to pay the remaining loan amount of ₹21,000, even though a substantial portion had already been repaid along with interest.

Police sub-inspector Sampath explained that the accused were involved in local moneylending activities, often targeting vegetable vendors, street hawkers, and other small traders. “They used to lend money for daily needs at high interest rates. If interest was not paid on time, they harassed the borrowers,” he said.

The case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and police have confirmed that a special team is actively investigating the matter to track down the remaining suspects involved in the assault.

The incident has raised concerns about predatory lending practices in the village and highlights the challenges faced by small traders and daily wage earners in managing debt under high-interest conditions.
