The Karnataka state government has taken strict action against two police sub-inspectors implicated in the robbery of a goldsmith in Karwar, with one officer dismissed and the other suspended pending a departmental inquiry. The case has shocked the state, highlighting the severity of criminal acts involving law enforcement personnel.
A senior police official confirmed that the state home department acted on the substantiated charges against the officers, describing the incident as “a grave and deplorable act committed by officers who are supposed to uphold the law and protect citizens.” East Zone Inspector General of Police BR Ravikantegowda called their actions a “heinous crime,” emphasizing the breach of public trust. Since the dismissed officer was still under probation, the termination was immediate.
The two accused officers have been identified as Malappa Yallappa Chippalakatti, PSI of Hamsabhavi Police Station in Byadagi taluk, Haveri district, and Praveenkumar, PSI of Sagar Town Police Station in Shivamogga district. According to police reports, the two allegedly conspired with three known associates to target Vishwanath Arkasali, a gold ornament manufacturer, in a premeditated plan.
On November 24, in the early hours of the morning, the group allegedly intercepted the goldsmith and forcibly took 78.15 grams of gold, including a gold biscuit and other jewellery. The robbery was reportedly carried out under threat, with the assailants using what was later identified as a toy gun.
The victim immediately reported the incident at KTJ Nagar Police Station in Davanagere, prompting law enforcement to form a team to investigate and apprehend the culprits. During the course of investigations, the involvement of the two sub-inspectors was uncovered, and both officers were taken into custody. Sources revealed that the officers confessed to participating in the robbery, confirming their complicity in the crime.
Both officers have been booked under Section 309 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for robbery. Police investigations are ongoing to identify the roles of the three other accused and to determine whether additional charges, including conspiracy, may be warranted against them.
The episode has drawn attention to the need for internal vigilance within law enforcement agencies, with officials reiterating that officers found guilty of criminal acts will face strict punitive action. The prompt action by the Karnataka government and police authorities sends a clear message that misconduct and criminal activity within the force will not be tolerated.
