The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed it has identified a police officer involved in the alleged assault and arrest of a bus conductor in Ikorodu, following a widely circulated video on social media. The footage reportedly shows the conductor resisting arrest while obstructing traffic, resulting in significant gridlock and hardship for commuters.
The bus involved has been impounded and is now in police custody pending further investigation. The police emphasized that the matter will be thoroughly examined to ensure justice is served.
“Once again, the Lagos State Police Command wishes to assure the general public that this matter will be thoroughly investigated and justice will be done,” the Command stated, underlining its commitment to transparency and lawful conduct among personnel.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, urged residents to remain law-abiding and report any violations of their rights. He also cautioned against dramatizing the incident, noting that resisting lawful arrest is itself a criminal offence.
“Unnecessary dramatisation against the Police officer seen in the video is not acceptable under the law. Resisting lawful arrest is also a criminal offence under the law of the land,” CP Jimoh said.
The officer in question is under investigation to determine the appropriateness of his actions, while the bus conductor has been contacted to appear for an interview with the Commissioner on Monday. The outcome of the investigation will be made public.
SaharaReporters had earlier reported that the confrontation, captured by a female passenger, sparked widespread outrage. In the video, the officer is seen pinning the conductor to the bus as passengers pleaded for him to stop.
Several bystanders warned the officer that the conductor appeared to be suffocating and urged assistance. One passenger cautioned: “If this guy slumps in your hands, it won’t be the way you think.” Meanwhile, the conductor, visibly distressed, repeatedly cried out: “Help me, I don’t know what I did.”
The officer defended his actions, claiming the conductor had assaulted him first. The police command has promised a full investigation into both the incident and the conduct of all involved parties.
