A wedding reception in Aligarh’s Civil Lines area turned tense on Sunday night after two guests raised objections over a sticker at a buffet counter labeled “beef curry.” The disagreement quickly escalated into a fracas, prompting intervention by police and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials.
According to police, the two guests, identified as Akash and Gaurav Kumar, objected to the label and attempted to record a video of the buffet counter. This act led to an argument with the caterer and other attendees. Circle Officer Sarvam Singh stated that three individuals — including the caterer and two others allegedly involved in the altercation — were briefly detained for questioning but released later in the night.
Samples of the food served at the wedding have been collected for forensic examination to determine the nature of the meat. “Action will be taken only after the forensic report establishes the type of meat. No case has been filed so far,” Singh clarified.
Gaurav Kumar has filed a written complaint against the caterer, alleging that the labeling deliberately hurt religious sentiments. Police officials noted that confusion often arises in the region due to the term “beef” being used interchangeably for both cow meat, which is banned in Uttar Pradesh, and buffalo meat, which is legal for consumption.
The incident quickly drew political attention. BJP workers gathered outside the Civil Lines Police Station demanding strict action against those responsible. In response, BSP leader Salman Shahid accused the BJP supporters of “high-handed behaviour” and noted that the matter had arisen from a misunderstanding.
Authorities have emphasized that no conclusions will be drawn until the forensic report is submitted, underlining the sensitive nature of meat-related disputes in the region. The police continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent any further escalation.
