Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia Hospitalised in Critical Condition

Dhaka, Bangladesh – November 30, 2025 – Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has been hospitalised in “very critical” condition, her family and party officials confirmed, as supporters and well-wishers across the country urged prayers for her recovery. The 80-year-old politician, a central figure in Bangladesh’s political landscape, was admitted to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka on November 23 due to a severe lung infection.

Current Medical Condition

Zia’s personal physician, Dr. A Z M Zahid Hossein, told reporters that the former prime minister remains in intensive care but appears to be responding to treatment.

“At this moment, I can say her condition has been in the same stage for the last three days. In doctors’ language, we say ‘she is responding to the treatment’. Please pray so that she can continue to receive this treatment,” Dr. Hossein said.

Party officials, including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, secretary-general of Zia’s Bangladesh National Party (BNP), described her condition as “very critical,” emphasizing the gravity of her illness.

Health Challenges and Medical History

Khaleda Zia has a history of multiple health conditions, including heart problems, liver and kidney issues, diabetes, lung complications, arthritis, and eye-related illnesses. She has a permanent pacemaker and has previously undergone stenting for her heart.

Due to the seriousness of her condition, BNP officials confirmed that an air ambulance is on standby to transfer Zia abroad for advanced treatment, should her health stabilize sufficiently for travel.

Family and Party Calls for Support

Zia’s eldest son, Tarique Rahman, who has been based in London since 2008, appealed to the public for prayers and solidarity.

“We express our heartfelt thanks and gratitude for all your prayers and love for the highly respected Begum Khaleda Zia,” Rahman said. “We fervently request you to continue your prayers for her early recovery.”

Supporters have gathered outside Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, holding banners and praying for her well-being. Many described Zia as an inspirational figure and a potential leader in Bangladesh’s upcoming February 2026 general elections.

Liton Molla, a 45-year-old private company driver waiting outside the hospital, said:

“I just pray she recovers and can contest in the election. At this moment, Bangladesh needs a leader like Khaleda Zia.”

Political Context

Khaleda Zia, who served as Bangladesh’s Prime Minister for three terms, was previously jailed for corruption in 2018 under the government of recently ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. During her imprisonment, Zia was barred from traveling abroad for medical treatment. She was released last year following Hasina’s removal from office.

Despite her frail health, Zia has pledged to actively campaign in the upcoming elections, in which the BNP is widely seen as a frontrunner. Interim political leaders, including Muhammad Yunus, have highlighted her influence and importance in Bangladesh’s democratic transition.

“During this transitional period to democracy, Khaleda Zia is a source of utmost inspiration for the nation. Her recovery is very important for the country,” Yunus said.

Public Reaction

News of Zia’s hospitalization has mobilized widespread public concern. Party activists, citizens, and political supporters have taken to social media and gathered outside hospitals to offer prayers, reflecting the former prime minister’s enduring influence on Bangladeshi politics.
