Russian Strikes Kill Six in Ukraine as Kyiv Envoys Head to US for Peace Talks

Kyiv, Ukraine – November 29, 2025 – A widespread Russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine has killed six people and injured dozens more, officials reported Saturday, while Kyiv’s negotiators flew to the United States to discuss a possible resolution to the ongoing war.

The strikes targeted residential areas, infrastructure, and the capital’s power grid, leaving over 400,000 households in Kyiv without electricity. Ukrainian authorities condemned the attacks as part of Russia’s continued campaign of destruction.

“While everyone is discussing points of peace plans, Russia continues to pursue its war plan of two points: to kill and destroy,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Scope of the Russian Attack

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia launched approximately 36 missiles and nearly 600 drones in the overnight assault. Casualties were reported across multiple regions:

  • Kyiv: 2 dead, 29 wounded, including civilians hit by debris from intercepted drones.
  • Kyiv surrounding region: 1 dead
  • Dnipropetrovsk region (southeast): 2 dead
  • Kherson region (south): 1 dead

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko described the attack as targeting “entire families,” with debris hitting residential buildings and causing widespread power outages in western parts of the city.

The European Union’s ambassador to Ukraine, Katarina Mathernova, criticized Russia’s actions, stating:

“While the world discusses a possible peace deal, Moscow answers with missiles, not diplomacy.”

Ukrainian Delegation Travels to the US

In parallel with the attacks, President Zelenskyy confirmed that his negotiators had departed for the United States to seek a “dignified peace” and an end to Russia’s full-scale invasion, which began in 2022.

The Ukrainian delegation is led by former defence chief Rustem Umerov, following the resignation of Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak amid a corruption probe.

The talks will involve high-level US officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, in Florida. Zelenskyy emphasized the urgency:

“The task is clear: to swiftly and substantively work out the steps needed to end the war.”

US officials have reportedly revised President Trump’s original 28-point peace plan in Geneva discussions, but key issues remain unresolved.

Black Sea Shadow Fleet Strikes

Separately, Ukrainian forces targeted two Russian “shadow fleet” tankers, the Kairos and Virat, used to export oil while circumventing Western sanctions. Ukrainian marine drones struck the vessels in the Black Sea near Turkiye’s Bosphorus Strait, causing fires but no casualties reported, as the tankers were empty en route to the Russian port of Novorossiysk.

The strikes are part of Kyiv’s ongoing campaign to disrupt Russia’s oil exports, which fund its military operations.

“Video shows both tankers sustained critical damage and were effectively taken out of service. This will deal a significant blow to Russian oil transportation,” said a Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) official.
