Riverdale stars Lili Reinhart and Camila Mendes share a decades-long friendship — and Reinhart had to go to extreme lengths to keep Mendes’ engagement a secret.
Lili Reinhart admitted she was so nervous about ruining the surprise that she couldn’t talk to Camila Mendes for weeks before the Riverdale alum’s engagement to Rudy Mancuso. The couple got engaged on October 24, 2025, in a star-studded surprise proposal and celebration.
The Lengths Reinhart Went to Keep the Secret
During a recent appearance on E! The Rundown, Reinhart revealed how she deliberately avoided contacting Mendes leading up to the engagement.
“I was like, ‘I can’t talk to her,'” Reinhart said. “Every person I texted about it, I stared at their name for five minutes to make sure I wasn’t accidentally texting her. She asked to get dinner with me in New York — I’m like, ‘Can’t, busy. Sorry, can’t see you.’ I was terrified.”
The actress, 29, and Mendes, 31, have been close friends since their time on Riverdale, where they starred together for seven seasons from 2017 to 2023. Reinhart said the fear of spoiling the surprise was so intense that she ignored both in-person and digital communications with Mendes.
A Perfectly Executed Surprise
Thanks to the careful planning, the proposal and engagement party went off without a hitch. Reinhart reflected:
“It happened, and I was like, ‘Thank God, no one ruined it.’ It was so wonderful, and I was crying a lot.”
The engagement party, held at Lucia in Los Angeles, included many celebrities, including Riverdale alums Madelaine Petsch and KJ Apa. Mendes’ fiancé, Rudy Mancuso, 33, orchestrated the surprise by having Mendes believe she was attending a birthday party for their mutual friend Rachel Matthews.
Celebration Continued Into the Night
The festivities didn’t stop after the engagement. According to sources, the celebration extended to Glen Powell’s tracksuit and tequila-themed birthday party, keeping the joyous energy going late into the night.
Reflecting on the event at the 2025 Governors Awards, Reinhart told Entertainment Tonight:
“I’m so glad that we’re all still in each other’s lives and get to have these, like, big life moments together. It’s really special.”
Mendes Calls It the ‘Best Surprise Ever’
Sharing the moment on Instagram, Mendes described the proposal as the “best surprise ever”, posting a series of 12 photos from the night and thanking friends and family who joined the celebration.
