Tommy Mellott’s path to the NFL has been anything but conventional. The Las Vegas Raiders’ sixth-round draft pick, who started 41 games at quarterback for Montana State, is making a bold transition to wide receiver in the NFL. And for Mellott, it’s all about doing whatever it takes to make the roster.
“I’ve always been a do-it-all kind of player,” Mellott said after being drafted. “Whether it was playing special teams, wildcat quarterback, or wide receiver, I’ve done whatever was needed. I’m ready to do the same for the Raiders, no matter the position.”
Mellott’s versatility has been a hallmark of his football career. He began his college career playing special teams before eventually moving to starting quarterback. In his time at Montana State, he displayed his adaptability by taking on wildcat quarterback duties and excelling in multiple roles. His willingness to embrace any challenge helped him earn the starting job and could be key to his NFL future.
“I played special teams my first year, I played wide receiver, I played wildcat quarterback. Eventually, those reps led to me becoming the starter,” Mellott explained. “When I get to Las Vegas, I’ll do whatever it takes to help the team. Whether it’s special teams, wide receiver, or something else, I’m all in.”
Mellott, who idolizes former NFL wide receiver Julian Edelman, draws inspiration from Edelman’s own transition from college quarterback to wide receiver. Edelman’s journey is especially meaningful to Mellott, as it was his special teams play in the preseason that helped him earn a spot on the New England Patriots roster. Mellott hopes to follow in those footsteps by making a mark wherever he can.
“I’ve always been a fan of Julian Edelman,” said Mellott. “When he first made the Patriots, it was his work as a punt returner that got him attention. I’m going to do whatever it takes to make an impact, just like he did.”
Mellott acknowledges that his transition into the NFL isn’t typical. As a player who wasn’t seen as a “clear-cut quarterback” prospect, his road to the league has been challenging. However, being drafted by the Raiders is a dream come true, and he’s determined to prove that he can contribute in any role.
“Very few teams seemed interested in me. I was a different kind of prospect,” he admitted. “To get drafted is an honor and a privilege, but the work is far from over. I’m excited to get to work, prove myself, and help the Raiders however I can.”
Mellott’s commitment to adapting and excelling in any role could be exactly what the Raiders need as they look to strengthen their roster. The versatile rookie is ready to give everything he’s got to make his mark in Las Vegas.
