Residents of Ilaje Local Government Area in Ondo State are calling for justice following the reported death of Edema Omagbemi, a young civilian worker allegedly tortured while in custody at the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Igbokoda.
According to eyewitness accounts shared with SaharaReporters and circulating on social media, Omagbemi, who worked closely with the base’s commanding officer, Captain A. Usman, was summoned over allegations of stealing $9,000.
“He was accused of allegedly stealing $9,000, so they called him to the base and tortured him till he fainted,” an eyewitness said, adding that the accusations were unsubstantiated. “It’s not that they found the money in his possession.”
The source further alleged that Omagbemi was chained and beaten after denying the accusation, and was later rushed to a hospital where he was confirmed dead. Community members noted that Omagbemi’s wife had given birth just days before the incident, intensifying their grief and outrage.
The case gained wider attention after a man identified as Adewale shared a video purportedly linked to the incident, urging public outcry and accountability.
“I just want justice for the guy; that is why I shared the information,” Adewale said.
Attempts by SaharaReporters to reach the Nigerian Navy for comment were unsuccessful, as Commodore A. O. Odejobi, Director of Naval Information (DINFO), could not be reached by phone.
Community leaders and human rights advocates are demanding an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Omagbemi’s death.
“We just need justice for the boy,” one resident said.
