With William Troost-Ekong officially retiring from international football, the Super Eagles are preparing for a leadership transition. Ekong, who captained Nigeria with distinction through several major tournaments, leaves behind a leadership vacuum that the team will soon need to fill.
As coach Eric Chelle evaluates candidates for the new captain, three players stand out due to their experience, influence, and seniority in the squad.
1. Wilfred Ndidi
Currently serving as the team’s vice-captain, Wilfred Ndidi is well-positioned to inherit the armband. The Besiktas midfielder made his Super Eagles debut in August 2015 and has earned 71 international caps.
Ndidi’s calm demeanor, professionalism, and long-standing presence in the squad make him a strong favourite to lead Nigeria, both on and off the pitch.
2. Alex Iwobi
Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi is another top contender. Since his debut on October 8, 2015, against the Democratic Republic of Congo, Iwobi has accumulated 91 caps, making him one of the most experienced active players in the national team.
His dedication to the Super Eagles and leadership qualities, combined with European club experience, strengthen his claim to the captaincy.
3. Victor Osimhen
Striker Victor Osimhen represents the team’s younger generation of leaders. Since debuting in June 2017, Osimhen has become the team’s offensive heartbeat, scoring 31 goals, just six shy of Rashidi Yekini’s all-time record of 37 for Nigeria.
Osimhen’s passion, influence on the pitch, and status as one of Africa’s top football stars make him a compelling candidate, despite being younger than Ndidi and Iwobi.
As Nigeria prepares for upcoming fixtures, the decision on Ekong’s successor will be closely watched by fans and pundits alike, as the next captain will play a key role in shaping the team’s future.
