256 Passengers Stranded in Milan as Air India Flight to Delhi Cancelled Ahead of Diwali

Milan/Delhi, October 19, 2025: Hundreds of passengers hoping to return to India for Diwali were left stranded in Milan after Air India abruptly cancelled flight AI138 from Milan to Delhi on Friday. The flight, carrying 256 passengers and 10 crew members, was grounded due to what the airline termed an “extended technical requirement” on the aircraft.

In a statement, Air India said the cancellation was made to “prioritise the safety of all passengers and crew.” The airline confirmed that all affected passengers were provided hotel accommodations and meals, though some hotels were located at a distance from the airport due to limited availability.

“Flight AI138 from Milan to Delhi on 17 October was cancelled due to an extended technical requirement on the aircraft scheduled to operate the flight, prioritising the safety of all passengers and crew,” the airline said.

Special arrangements were made for passengers facing visa constraints. One passenger, whose Schengen visa was set to expire on October 20, was rebooked on another airline departing Milan on October 19 to ensure compliance with visa rules.

Air India expressed regret over the disruption, stating: “We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused and reaffirm our commitment to the safety and well-being of our passengers and crew.”

The last-minute cancellation disrupted travel plans for many, who were counting on reaching India in time for Diwali celebrations on October 20. The airline said it had rebooked affected passengers on alternate flights where possible and continues to provide necessary ground assistance.
