Davido pauses AfroNation performance to honour Wizkid’s late mother with a minute of silence

Afrobeat superstar Davido delivered one of the most emotional moments at AfroNation after halting his performance to pay tribute to the late mother of fellow artist Wizkid.

The atmosphere at the concert shifted instantly as thousands of fans went silent, watching Davido speak candidly about loss, grief and solidarity.

“Personally, I have lost many loved ones, people close to me, so I understand how Wizkid is feeling right now. May his mother—our mother, because she was dear to me—rest in peace,” he said.

The tribute touched many, especially as fans recalled Davido previously revealing that Wizkid called him every day following the death of his son—a gesture Davido said he deeply appreciated.

Social Media Reactions

The moment sparked widespread reactions online, with fans divided over the public display.

@hardelclarkss:
“You see this and still say Davido is the bad person? Forget music—Wizkid can’t match Davido when it comes to genuine love and respect.”

@Dennyagbehor:
“Davido loves even those who hate him. I like that he’s becoming more aware and distancing himself from their circle.”

@ibinabosekibo:
“Same Davido wey Wizkid shift him album because of his son’s death? And the calls Wizkid made to him during that time? Hypocrisy everywhere.”

@chidozie_odini:
“He could have sent condolences privately. Why make a show out of it? This is people-pleasing behaviour.”

The reactions reflected the long-standing divided fandom around both stars. Still, many agreed that the moment highlighted an ongoing thread of mutual respect and empathy between two of Africa’s most influential artists.
