Nuh, Haryana: A routine operation by the Delhi Police to apprehend a suspected vehicle thief in Nangla Jamalgarh village of Nuh district, Haryana, on Friday morning escalated into a clash with local villagers, resulting in damage to police property and heightened tensions in the area.
According to officials, the incident took place around 10 am, when the Delhi Police team arrived in the village to detain a suspect believed to have stolen a pickup van. While the police claimed they had identified and caught the alleged thief, tensions quickly escalated as local residents intervened, reportedly freeing the suspect and confronting the police personnel.
Eyewitnesses and circulating footage on social media showed hundreds of villagers pushing and shoving the police team, with at least one glass window pane of a Delhi Police vehicle damaged during the skirmish. The video appeared to capture the intensity of the confrontation, although local police authorities said they were not initially aware of the incident when it occurred.
Conflicting Claims
The Delhi Police maintained that the suspect, identified as Tausif, a local resident and a professional welder, was involved in the theft of a pickup van. However, Tausif’s family refuted these claims, insisting that he had no involvement in any criminal activity. A villager present at the scene stated that the confrontation erupted when the police attempted to take Tausif into custody despite his family’s assurances of his innocence.
A senior officer from the Nuh police said that following the clash, the Delhi Police team returned after receiving assurances from Tausif’s family that they would cooperate and ensure his appearance before the authorities at a later stage. This de-escalation helped prevent further violence, though the incident left the village community shaken.
Local Police Respond
Inspector Omvir Singh, SHO of Punhana police station, highlighted that the Delhi Police had not officially informed the local police about the operation prior to entering the village. “We got to know that a team of Delhi Police conducted a raid in Nangla Jamalgarh village today, but they have not officially informed the local police. No complaint has been received from the Delhi Police or the villagers yet,” he said.
The lack of prior communication between the Delhi Police and local law enforcement appears to have contributed to confusion and mistrust during the incident. Local authorities emphasized that such operations require coordination to avoid misunderstandings and maintain public order.
Tensions in Nuh
Nuh district has occasionally witnessed clashes between law enforcement and local communities, often due to sensitive issues regarding property, local disputes, or perceived overreach by outside police forces. Residents of Nangla Jamalgarh expressed concern over the uncoordinated raid, stating that the sudden police action in the village, coupled with the large number of people involved, could have led to more serious injuries or property damage.
Villagers said that while they respect the role of law enforcement, they expected proper communication and coordination from agencies entering their jurisdiction. Some residents alleged that the police response was aggressive, particularly when they were trying to assert that Tausif was innocent.
Broader Implications
The incident underscores the challenges faced when law enforcement agencies from one jurisdiction carry out operations in another, particularly in densely populated rural areas. Coordination between local and external police teams is critical to ensure the safety of both officers and residents, prevent property damage, and avoid misunderstandings that could escalate into violence.
Officials from both the Delhi Police and Nuh administration have indicated that the matter is under review. Investigations are expected to determine the validity of the theft allegations against Tausif, assess the circumstances leading to the clash, and review procedural lapses in the handling of the operation.
Meanwhile, authorities have called for calm and restraint from both villagers and police personnel to prevent any recurrence. Community leaders in Nangla Jamalgarh urged residents to allow the law to take its course while expressing their willingness to cooperate with officials for a peaceful resolution.
