Sheikh Gumi Alleges Foreign Support for Armed Groups in Nigeria

Kaduna-based Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Gumi has claimed that some foreign powers are backing terrorist and armed groups in Nigeria, citing the nature of their weapons and the coordination of recent attacks as evidence.

In an interview with BBC Hausa, Gumi said the sudden surge in violence, after months of relative calm, indicates the involvement of external actors capable of destabilizing the country. He highlighted that previously dangerous areas, like the Abuja–Kaduna highway and Birnin Gwari, had become safer before the renewed attacks.

Gumi alleged that wealthy foreign individuals provide support to these groups, suggesting that the timing of attacks often aligns with international narratives against Nigeria.

The cleric reiterated his long-standing call for dialogue with armed groups, arguing that the root causes of insurgency—such as ignorance, misguidance, and neglect—are often overlooked. He criticized the previous administration for failing to support his outreach efforts, which aimed to dissuade bandits from kidnapping and stealing.

Responding to critics who accuse him of defending criminals, Gumi stressed that his approach is based on religious duty and conflict resolution, not sympathy for the perpetrators.
