New Delhi: Chief of Army Staff Gen Upendra Dwivedi conducted a comprehensive assessment of India’s military preparedness in the central sector, focusing on the strategically sensitive borders with Nepal and China. His two-day visit, which concluded on Sunday, involved inspections of high-altitude forward posts and interactions with troops deployed in challenging terrain, officials said.
During the tour, Gen Dwivedi visited forward positions in Pithoragarh and adjoining areas to evaluate operational readiness, assess the effectiveness of ongoing capability enhancement programmes, and strengthen civil-military linkages in the region. According to an official readout, the Army chief emphasised the importance of maintaining a robust and agile posture along the central sector, which serves as a critical gateway to both the Nepalese and Chinese frontiers.
As part of his review, Gen Dwivedi examined ongoing initiatives to enhance surveillance capabilities, including the deployment of advanced monitoring systems, the introduction of specialist mobility platforms, and the integration of next-generation technologies to improve reconnaissance and situational awareness. Coordination with allied security agencies and optimisation of intelligence assets were also key components of the assessment, reflecting the Army’s focus on maintaining a multi-layered security apparatus in the sector.
In his interactions with troops, Gen Dwivedi praised their resilience, discipline, and tactical acumen in operating under extreme climatic conditions and rugged terrain. He lauded the innovative employment of new equipment in high-altitude posts and commended the personnel for demonstrating steadfast devotion to duty despite the challenges posed by remote deployment areas.
“Your professionalism and courage are the bedrock of India’s security along these vital borders,” the Army chief reportedly told the soldiers. He reaffirmed the Indian Army’s full preparedness to respond to evolving security threats and emphasised the importance of maintaining operational excellence at all times.
Beyond operational assessments, Gen Dwivedi met with veterans and engaged with local communities, recognising their contributions to regional security and border stability. He highlighted the strategic importance of the Kumaon region, underscoring its role as a gateway to sensitive areas along both the Nepal and China borders. Invoking the legacy of the Kumaon Regiment, the Army chief praised the local population for their support and partnership in ensuring border security.
“The Indian Army in Kumaon embodies strength with compassion, simultaneously defending the nation’s frontiers and empowering border communities,” he said, according to the Army readout. The visit served not only to boost troop morale but also to reinforce civil-military ties and highlight the Army’s commitment to supporting regional development alongside maintaining security.
Gen Dwivedi concluded the visit by reiterating the Indian Army’s unwavering resolve to uphold the highest standards of duty, honour, and service. He emphasised that operational preparedness, strategic foresight, and close coordination with local communities are essential components in safeguarding India’s interests in the central sector.
The visit underscores the Army’s continued focus on the central sector as a strategically significant region, where challenges of terrain, altitude, and evolving security dynamics demand constant vigilance, technological advancement, and proactive engagement with both troops and civilian populations.
