The Ex-Service Men and Family Welfare Association of Nigeria has urged the federal government to settle all outstanding pension arrears and other entitlements.
The association’s president, Anthony Agbas, made the call during a peaceful protest by ex-servicemen at the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja on Wednesday.
Agbas emphasized that military pensioners in the country have faced significant financial hardship over the years.
“We were informed that the funds have been approved for some time, but we have yet to receive any payment,” he said.
He outlined the association’s demands, including payment of palliatives and arrears from October 2023 to November 2024, a 20 to 28 percent salary increase and its arrears from January to November, as well as payment of a N32,000 flat rate and arrears from July to November. He also called for the payment of the new National Minimum Wage increment and its arrears from July to November, among other requests.
Agbas further clarified that the association represents various groups of retired Nigerian Armed Forces members and their families.
An official from the Ministry of Finance, addressing the protesters, assured them that their request had been approved and was currently being processed.
