Kyiv, Ukraine — December 7, 2025: Overnight and Sunday missile, drone, and shelling attacks by Russian forces have killed at least three people in Ukraine, coinciding with the third day of diplomatic talks between U.S. and Ukrainian officials aimed at ending the ongoing war.
Local authorities reported that a man was killed in a drone strike on Chernihiv, a northern region of Ukraine, on Saturday night. Meanwhile, a combined missile and drone strike targeted infrastructure in the central industrial city of Kremenchuk, disrupting power and water supplies. Kremenchuk hosts one of Ukraine’s largest oil refineries and is a key industrial hub.
In addition, shelling by Russian troops in the Kharkiv region killed two people and injured seven others on Sunday, according to regional police.
Russia Accused of “Weaponizing Winter”
Ukrainian officials and Western allies have accused Russia of deliberately targeting energy infrastructure to deprive civilians of heat, electricity, and running water during winter. Kyiv has described this tactic as “weaponizing” the cold to pressure the Ukrainian population.
Diplomatic Efforts Underway
The attacks coincided with ongoing negotiations in Florida between U.S. and Ukrainian officials. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed a “substantive phone call” with U.S. representatives on Saturday evening, emphasizing Ukraine’s commitment to pursuing peace in good faith.
Keith Kellogg, the outgoing U.S. envoy for Ukraine, said at the Reagan National Defense Forum that efforts to end the war were “in the last 10 meters,” with two major issues remaining: the Donbas region and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
- Donbas: Mostly under Russian control, including Donetsk and Luhansk, which were illegally annexed three years ago along with two southern regions.
- Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant: While currently under Russian control, it is not operational. Maintaining stable power is critical to cooling six shutdown reactors and spent fuel to prevent a nuclear catastrophe.
Kellogg is set to leave his post in January and did not participate in the Florida talks.
Upcoming International Engagement
U.K., French, and German leaders are scheduled to meet with President Zelenskyy in London on Monday to further discuss solutions and support Ukraine in ongoing conflict resolution efforts.
Kremlin Response
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov welcomed the Trump administration’s new national security strategy, describing it as “encouraging.” According to RIA Novosti, Peskov said the strategy emphasized dialogue and improving relations with Russia, highlighting a U.S. interest in reestablishing strategic stability after years of tension.
Implications
The recent attacks demonstrate both the ongoing volatility in conflict zones and the urgency of diplomatic efforts. Russia’s targeting of civilian infrastructure continues to raise international concern, while high-level negotiations signal a potential pathway toward conflict resolution.
