A group of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) of Tiv origin has accused the Taraba State Government and Governor Agbu Kefas of unequal protection and forced displacement in parts of the state.
Allegations of Discrimination and Land Acquisition:
- The Tiv IDPs claim the government’s acquisition of over 150 hectares each from Ikyaior and Jandekyula for a Military Forward Operating Base disproportionately affects Tiv returnees.
- They argue that Jukun communities have received government support to return home after the 2019 Jukun–Tiv conflict, while Tiv IDPs have faced obstructions for more than five years.
- Currently, over 300,000 Tiv people remain displaced across Wukari, Donga, Ibi, Takum, and other areas.
Broader Grievances:
- Tiv communities allege lack of representation in traditional councils, political exclusion, denial of certificates of origin, limited government employment access, renaming of villages, and imposition of external traditional rulers.
- The proposed acquisition of over 400 hectares is seen as an escalation of marginalization, targeting the few villages that have resettled.
Call to Action:
- Tiv IDPs, led by Peter Achibo, urged the governor to uphold constitutional equality, ensure safe resettlement, and protect displaced Tiv persons from renewed violence.
Bottom line: The Tiv IDPs in Taraba are highlighting systemic marginalization, urging government action to guarantee equal rights, security, and land access for all communities.
