The Chief of Army Staff and the Chief of the National Guard of Benin Republic have been released after being held hostage during Sunday’s failed coup attempt.
Security analyst Brant Grant confirmed their release in a statement on X on Monday. “The Beninese Chief of Army Staff and the Chief of Staff of the National Guard have been freed after they were taken hostage by the mutineers during the coup yesterday,” he said.
Their release follows a nationwide broadcast by President Patrice Talon, in which he declared that his government had regained full control after the unrest.
Earlier, Talon and several senior military officials were briefly seized in Cotonou by mutinous soldiers led by Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri.
The incident is the latest in a series of coups and attempted takeovers in West Africa in recent months, following similar unrest in Niger, Burkina Faso, and Guinea-Bissau.
