Two Dead, Two Injured in Separate Midnight Crashes in Lagos

Two separate road accidents in Lagos early Monday morning claimed two lives and left two others injured.

Eyewitnesses reported that both crashes occurred around midnight after the vehicles involved reportedly lost control, leading to fatalities and injuries. Emergency responders evacuated the victims, taking the injured to nearby hospitals while recovering the bodies of those killed.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the first crash occurred on Otedola Bridge, inward Berger, and the second on the Third Mainland Bridge, heading toward the UNILAG waterfront.

LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki said both deaths resulted from the Otedola Bridge accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Preliminary findings indicate that an unregistered vehicle carrying two occupants, including the driver, was speeding when it collided with a moving, heavily loaded trailer at around 2:30 a.m., killing both occupants instantly.

“In a disturbing development, the trailer operator fled the scene with the articulated vehicle,” Bakare-Oki added.

LASTMA’s Night-Gang Teams, deployed for midnight surveillance, quickly arrived at the scene. They cleared the bodies from the main carriageway and removed the wrecked vehicle to prevent further accidents. Police officers from the Isheri Division provided security, while the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU) handled the formal evacuation of the remains.

The second incident occurred around 5:00 a.m. on the Third Mainland Bridge near the UNILAG waterfront, involving an empty tanker and a pure-water distribution van (plate number SMK 67 XH). The collision left two people severely injured. The Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) administered first aid before transporting the victims to a nearby medical facility.

Bakare-Oki praised LASTMA officers for maintaining traffic flow on both corridors despite the incidents. He extended condolences to the families of the deceased and reiterated that speeding and traffic violations continue to claim innocent lives.

He emphasized LASTMA’s commitment to enforcing speed limits and urged motorists to comply with traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies.
