Kumbakonam, Dec 8 (PTI) — A Class 12 student of a government school near Kumbakonam succumbed to his injuries early Sunday morning after being allegedly attacked by a group of Class 11 students, police said.
The incident took place at Government Arignar Anna Model Higher Secondary School in Patteeswaram on December 4, following a clash between the two classes. Fourteen Class 11 students reportedly assaulted their senior, hitting him on the head with a stick and leaving him seriously injured.
The boy’s parents rushed him to the school immediately after being informed and admitted him to the Government Hospital in Kumbakonam. He was later transferred to a private hospital in Thanjavur for advanced treatment and underwent surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain. Despite the medical intervention, he succumbed to his injuries around 2:30 am on Sunday, police confirmed.
All 14 accused students have been arrested and lodged in a juvenile home. Initially, the Patteeswaram police registered a case of attempt to murder. An official stated that after the post-mortem report is received, the case will be updated to a murder case.
The tragic incident has raised concerns over student violence in schools and the need for stricter monitoring and preventive measures to ensure the safety of students within educational institutions.
