Telangana Proposes ‘Donald Trump Avenue’ in Hyderabad, Sparks BJP Criticism

The Telangana government has proposed naming a prominent road along the United States Consulate General in Hyderabad after former US President Donald Trump, drawing immediate criticism from the BJP. The road is expected to be officially called “Donald Trump Avenue”, as part of a broader plan to dedicate roads and junctions in Hyderabad to global figures and corporations.

Government’s Plans for Road Namings

In addition to the Trump Avenue proposal, the Telangana government has announced that a greenfield radial road at the proposed Regional Ring Road (RRR) will be named after the late industrialist Ratan Tata, in recognition of his contributions to India’s business landscape.

Earlier, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy suggested naming key roads in Hyderabad after leading global corporations while addressing the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) conclave in Delhi. Under this initiative:

  • A significant road near Google’s upcoming campus in the Financial District, expected to be the company’s largest office outside the United States, will be named “Google Street.”
  • Roads and junctions may soon be dedicated to other technology giants such as Microsoft and Wipro, with proposed names like Microsoft Road and Wipro Junction.

The government indicated that this move aims to acknowledge the global influence of these corporations and their contributions to technology and industry in India. Additional recognitions for distinguished individuals and companies are under consideration.

BJP Reacts Strongly

The BJP quickly criticised the Telangana government’s proposals. Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar suggested that instead of renaming roads after trending global figures, the state should focus on historical and meaningful names. He proposed renaming Hyderabad itself to Bhagyanagar, pointing out what he called the government’s misplaced priorities.

In his remarks, Sanjay Kumar said:
“If the Congress government is so eager to change names, they might as well start with something that actually has history and meaning. Meanwhile, the only party actually stepping out, questioning the government, and taking up real people issues through MahaDharna is the BJP.”

The BJP also mocked the trend of renaming places based on popular or viral figures, contrasting it with efforts to highlight real governance and citizen-focused issues.

Traffic Advisory Ahead of Telangana Global Rising Summit 2047

Ahead of the Telangana Global Rising Summit 2047, Hyderabad traffic authorities issued advisories for December 8 and 9. Key points include:

  • Heavy congestion expected near ORR Exit 15 at Pedda Golconda
  • VVIP convoys may slow traffic and restrict road access in the area throughout the summit
  • Commuters advised to avoid the stretch during restricted hours and use alternate routes
  • Signboards and police personnel will be deployed to guide motorists and regulate vehicle flow

Officials urged citizens to plan travel in advance and cooperate with authorities to minimize disruption during the event.

Context and Implications

The move to name roads after global figures and corporations reflects Telangana’s ambition to project Hyderabad as a global city and technology hub. Naming roads after companies like Google and Microsoft aligns with ongoing efforts to attract foreign investment and highlight Hyderabad’s growing IT and corporate infrastructure.

However, the decision to honour Donald Trump—a foreign political figure—has provoked political debate. Critics argue that road namings should reflect local history, culture, and contributions of Indian citizens rather than trending international personalities.

The proposal highlights the tension between modernization and political symbolism, as Telangana seeks to balance global recognition with domestic political sentiment.

The Trump Avenue initiative, along with corporate and industrial dedications like Google Street and Ratan Tata Road, signals a new approach to urban naming conventions in Hyderabad, combining technology, international diplomacy, and corporate influence in the city’s infrastructure narrative.

As the debate unfolds, the Telangana government may face further political scrutiny from opposition parties while implementing its vision of making Hyderabad a globally recognized urban hub.
