The University of Ibadan (UI) has been described as a “launchpad for success” by alumna Mrs. Bola Olajomi-Otubu, CEO of Beige Spaces Limited, during the Class of 2025 convocation ceremony.
Speaking to the graduating students, Olajomi-Otubu emphasized that UI is more than an academic institution; it serves as a training ground and refining fire, shaping both personal and professional growth. She noted that she is a proud second-generation alumna, with her father, the Elesugbon of Esugbon, Obaruwa I, a retired professor of Zoology, and two sisters also having graduated from UI.
“University of Ibadan is not just another university. It is where my foundation for success was built. A building that will stand tall must rest on the right foundation. The same applies to life,” she said.
Olajomi-Otubu shared her journey from psychology graduate to human resources professional and eventually to leading a construction and design firm employing nearly 60 professionals. She attributed her ability to pivot, rebuild, and thrive to the lessons learned at UI.
She encouraged graduates to embrace resilience, patience, discipline, faith, and integrity, warning against the illusions of social media and fleeting trends.
“Life after UI will test your resolve. There will be days when your plans collapse like an unreinforced structure. Remember your foundation and the lessons you learned here,” she said.
“Anyone can hustle, but few can build. Build something that lasts longer than you.”
Olajomi-Otubu also highlighted the importance of community, diversity of thought, and learning from Nigeria’s challenges. She referenced UI’s distinguished alumni, including Prof. Wole Soyinka, Chinua Achebe, Prof. Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, and Prof. Grace Alele-Williams, describing them as giants whose legacies continue to inspire new generations.
“We see farther today because they stood tall yesterday. You, the Class of 2025, now join this extraordinary lineage. You are the next set of shoulders for others to stand on,” she told the graduates.
Concluding her address, Olajomi-Otubu charged the graduating class to step into the world confidently:
“Go forth. May your foundations hold strong, your faith shine bright, and your future stand tall.”
