New Delhi, December 9, 2025 — President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday called upon Indian craftsmen to focus on obtaining unique Geographical Indication (GI) tags for their products, emphasizing that such recognition can significantly enhance the global identity and credibility of India’s traditional handicrafts. She made these remarks while presenting the National Handicrafts Awards for 2023 and 2024 at a ceremony held in the capital.
Highlighting the skill, dedication, and perseverance of India’s artisans, President Murmu noted that their efforts have already earned a distinct place for Indian crafts in international markets. “I request all the people associated with this sector to move towards obtaining the GI tag for their specific products. This will give your products a unique identity at the national and international level and increase your credibility,” she said.
GI tags, she explained, are a vital instrument to highlight the origin of a product and its distinctive qualities linked to a particular region. Such recognition not only preserves India’s rich cultural heritage but also underscores the unique craftsmanship and traditional knowledge of local artisans. The President underscored that products carrying GI tags are acknowledged worldwide for their quality, authenticity, and cultural significance, and that acquiring these tags can open new avenues for both recognition and market expansion.
President Murmu also highlighted government initiatives like the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme, which are strengthening the international identity of India’s regional handicrafts. Through such programs, artisans receive institutional support to refine their products, access modern technology, and reach wider markets.
The President further stressed the economic and social significance of handicrafts. Employing over 3.2 million people across rural and remote areas, the handicrafts sector is an essential source of livelihood while promoting inclusive and decentralized development. “Their dedication and commitment to art keep our traditions alive. I believe that the creative practice of artists strengthens India’s cultural identity,” she said.
Over the past decade, the government has taken several measures to empower artisans and strengthen the sector. More than 1.5 lakh handicraft units are now linked to the government’s e-Marketplace, providing artisans with access to a larger consumer base. President Murmu praised initiatives like IndiaHandmade, an e-commerce platform enabling artisans to sell products directly to buyers, thereby granting them both financial independence and social recognition.
Speaking on the broader importance of creativity and culture, President Murmu emphasized that India’s long-term developmental goals, including becoming a developed nation by 2047, require nurturing creativity in society. “I am confident that today’s honour will not only inspire the award winners to move forward but will also inspire the young craftsmen to perform at their best,” she said.
She also reflected on the timeless role of art in human society, stating, “Art reflects our memories of the past, experiences of the present, and aspirations for the future. Humans have been expressing their emotions through painting or sculpture since ancient times. Art connects people to culture. Art also connects people with each other.”
President Murmu’s remarks underscored a vision where the traditional knowledge, dedication, and creativity of Indian craftsmen are celebrated, supported, and brought into mainstream economic and cultural narratives, helping them gain recognition not just domestically but across the globe.
