The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has rolled out a major economic empowerment programme targeting 9,500 persons with disabilities (PWDs) across the country, through the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).
Under the scheme, 250 PWDs in each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory will receive N200,000 each, amounting to N50 million per state and a total of N1.9 billion nationwide. The support is aimed at helping beneficiaries recapitalise existing businesses and improve their livelihoods.
Speaking through the wife of the Abia State Governor and RHI State Coordinator, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, the First Lady said the programme reflects the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritises inclusive growth and support for vulnerable citizens.
She noted that the RHI has, over the past two years, provided financial grants to over 100,000 women petty traders, small business owners, and persons with disabilities, enabling them to grow their enterprises and strengthen household income.
The First Lady highlighted that the initiative spans key sectors such as agriculture, economic empowerment, education, health, and social welfare—interventions designed to improve family well-being across Nigeria.
She added that the RHI’s Social Investment Programmes have extended relief to victims of floods, communal conflicts, and other disasters, as well as to the elderly, widows, and children of fallen heroes.
Through the Monthly Food Outreach Scheme, food supplies have so far reached 22 states and the Federal Capital Territory, along with Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and other vulnerable groups.
Mrs. Tinubu announced that the RHI Governing Board has approved making the PWD empowerment programme an annual event, aligned with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
She urged beneficiaries to use the grants wisely:
“Let this support be a seed that grows into something greater—a business that sustains you and your family.”
