Nigerian Catholic Laity Council Joins Bishops in Condemning Worsening Insecurity, Demands Protection

The Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria (CLCN) has joined the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) in condemning the escalating insecurity across the country, particularly in the Northern and Middle Belt regions.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the council denounced recent violent attacks that have devastated communities and claimed lives, stressing the urgent need for government intervention. The release was signed by Sir Ambrose Obioha, National President of CLCN, and Mr. Francis Ojo Olayinka, National Secretary-General.

The council praised the leadership of Catholic Bishops in Makurdi, Gboko, and Katsina-Ala in Benue State for their efforts to maintain peace and protect their congregations during the crisis.

“We deeply appreciate their unwavering commitment to peace and justice,” the statement said.

CLCN also welcomed a US-based fact-finding team, noting its role in bringing international attention to Nigeria’s security challenges.

“We condemn the senseless violence and bloodshed that have desecrated our common humanity,” the group said. “We stand in solidarity with our Christian brothers and sisters, and all innocent citizens who have fallen victim to these atrocities.”

The council urged the government to act decisively to safeguard lives and property, calling on authorities to take immediate and concrete steps to address the security crisis.

In addition, CLCN appealed to all Nigerians to reject violence and hatred, promoting unity and peaceful coexistence. The statement emphasized that national leaders must prioritize the welfare and security of citizens to build a nation where everyone can live in peace, dignity, and prosperity.

“We are for peace and brotherly living,” the statement concluded.
