Crystal Palace cruised to a commanding 3-0 victory over Shelbourne in Dublin, taking a major step toward securing a place in the last 16 of the UEFA Conference League. The Premier League side showcased their attacking prowess, with first-half goals from Christantus Uche, Eddie Nketiah, and Yeremy Pino putting the visitors in complete control.
First-Half Blitz Seals the Win
Palace, who qualified for European competition for the first time after winning the FA Cup last season, came into the match needing a positive result. They began the day in 18th place in the group, with two wins and two losses. Manager Oliver Glasner named a strong lineup, including England internationals Marc Guehi and Adam Wharton.
The opening goal came in the 11th minute, as Uche finished off a polished team move to put Palace ahead. Shortly afterward, Nketiah doubled the lead with a close-range tap-in following a rebound off the post from Uche’s shot. Palace thought they might have been awarded a penalty during the move, but the second goal ensured their dominance.
Chris Richards nearly added a third before Yeremy Pino wrapped up the half with a brilliant solo goal in the 37th minute. Despite some late chances, including a Romain Esse strike that hit both posts, Palace maintained their clean sheet, with Shelbourne failing to score in the competition so far.
Palace’s Impressive Run Continues
This win represents another highlight in a remarkable period for Crystal Palace. After lifting the FA Cup in May and the Community Shield in August, Palace now sit fourth in the Premier League, while remaining one of the favourites in the Conference League.
Their European journey began with a controversial demotion: although FA Cup success would normally have placed them in the Europa League, UEFA ruled Palace were in breach of multi-club ownership rules, placing them instead in the Conference League. Despite this, Palace have adapted quickly and are considered strong contenders, joining the ranks of previous Premier League winners such as West Ham (2023) and Chelsea (last season).
Two early setbacks, a 1-0 home loss to Cypriot side Larnaca and a 2-1 defeat against Strasbourg, meant Palace needed a solid performance in Dublin, which they delivered emphatically.
Squad Rotation and Key Performances
Glasner demonstrated the importance of squad rotation amid a hectic schedule that sees Palace play 15 games between 22 November and 10 January. Only four changes were made from the side that beat Fulham in the Premier League, with Uche coming in and immediately making an impact with a goal and an assist.
With the match securely in hand by halftime, Palace were able to rest key players. Daichi Kamada, Adam Wharton, and Yeremy Pino were withdrawn at the break, while Nketiah was replaced midway through the second half. Additionally, 17-year-old striker Benji Casey made his senior debut, highlighting Palace’s emphasis on youth development.
Shelbourne battled throughout but remain scoreless in the competition, with goalkeeper Walter Benitez making key saves, including a late effort from Daniel Kelly.
What’s Next for Crystal Palace and Shelbourne
Crystal Palace face a crucial Premier League clash against Manchester City on Sunday at 14:00 GMT, before hosting KuPS at Selhurst Park for their final group-stage match of the Conference League on Thursday at 20:00 GMT.
For Shelbourne, already eliminated from the tournament, their last game of 2025 will be an away trip to Celje in Slovenia on Thursday, as they look to end their season on a positive note.
