Walsh, Shibasaki, and Nawaqanitawase Named in Australia Starting Line-Up for Rugby League Ashes Test

Australia has named Reece Walsh, Gehamat Shibasaki, and Mark Nawaqanitawase in the starting XV for the first Rugby League Ashes Test against England, taking place this Saturday at Wembley Stadium.

The selections mark exciting international debuts for all three players, reflecting a mix of form, experience, and impressive performances during the 2025 NRL season.

Debutants Making Their Mark

  • Reece Walsh, 23, replaces Dylan Edwards at full-back after earning the Clive Churchill Medal as man of the match in the NRL Grand Final, where the Brisbane Broncos defeated Melbourne Storm. Walsh’s dynamic running and playmaking abilities make him a key asset for Australia’s attacking line.
  • Gehamat Shibasaki, 27, also of the Brisbane Broncos, scored two tries in the Grand Final. Shibasaki’s rise is remarkable, given he joined the Broncos on trial earlier this season and had played just three NRL games in the previous three years. His selection is a testament to his resilience and form.
  • Mark Nawaqanitawase, 25, a former rugby union Wallabies player, was the NRL’s leading try-scorer this season after switching codes. His pace and finishing skills provide a potent threat on the wing for the Kangaroos.

Additionally, forward Keaon Koloamatangi, a fourth debutant, will start on the bench. Koloamatangi previously represented Tonga at the 2022 World Cup and in the 2023 three-match series against England.

Australia Coach Kevin Walters on New Selections

Australia head coach Kevin Walters praised the newcomers:

“It’s going to be a huge thrill for all four of them to wear the green and gold for the first time in a Test match at such an iconic stadium. Every member of our squad, whether they take the field or not, is about to experience something incredibly special this Saturday at Wembley. We’re on this Ashes journey together, and it will take a collective effort from everyone involved.”
