The Cross River State Government has collaborated with Muslim communities across the state in a series of special prayers for peace, unity, and progress, conducted simultaneously in all eighteen local government areas.
The prayer session, which coincided with the Friday prayers, was observed at the Ahmadiyya Mosque in Calabar, as well as other designated mosques throughout the state.
Peace and Unity in Cross River
Speaking shortly after the prayer session in Calabar, the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Erasmus Ekpang, reaffirmed the peaceful and inclusive nature of Cross River State. He emphasized that the state remains a place where people of different origins and religious affiliations co-exist harmoniously.
Conveying the message from Governor Senator Bassey Edet Otu, Ekpang assured non-indigenes in the state of their safety and the continuation of peaceful coexistence. He remarked, “Many of you were born here and have married among us, making us one people. For decades, Muslims and indigenes of Cross River State have lived peacefully together, and this harmony must be sustained.”
Security Consciousness
While celebrating the state’s unity, Ekpang urged the Muslim communities to stay vigilant and security-conscious. He advised them to identify and report suspicious individuals and to ensure proper registration of newcomers, which he said is essential in preventing criminal activities.
A Prayer for Peaceful Coexistence
In his remarks, the Chief Imam of the Ahmadiyya Mosque in Calabar, Alhaji Akere Abdulhafeez, explained that the prayer was organized to seek divine guidance for the state government and its leaders. He emphasized the responsibility of Muslims to contribute positively to society’s well-being.
“As Muslims, we have a responsibility to contribute positively to the wellbeing of the society in which we live. That is why we organized this prayer for the peaceful coexistence of the state,” said Alhaji Abdulhafeez.
He also added that prayers were made for a peaceful and hitch-free Christmas celebration, underscoring the importance of mutual respect among people of different faiths.
Commitment to Peace
Muslim communities across the state reiterated their commitment to peace, unity, and loyalty to the Cross River State Government. They expressed their satisfaction with the cordial relationship they share with state authorities, further solidifying their dedication to fostering peace and progress in the region.
This collective show of faith and unity underscores the resolve of both the state government and Muslim communities to ensure the continued prosperity and peaceful coexistence of all residents of Cross River State.
