Dominant Aryna Sabalenka Wins Back-to-Back WTA Player of the Year Awards

World number one Aryna Sabalenka has been named Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Player of the Year for a second consecutive season, capping off another dominant year on the women’s tour.

The 27-year-old Belarusian enjoyed a standout 2025 campaign, winning four titles, the most of any player on the WTA Tour, and cementing her status as the leading force in women’s tennis. Her season highlight came in September, when she successfully defended her US Open title, defeating Amanda Anisimova in the final to secure her fourth Grand Slam singles crown.

A Season of Consistency and Dominance

Sabalenka reached a tour-leading nine finals across the season, underlining her remarkable consistency at the highest level. Although she narrowly missed out on additional Grand Slam titles—losing to Madison Keys in the Australian Open final and Coco Gauff at the French Open—her overall body of work left little doubt about her supremacy in 2025.

In addition to her US Open triumph, Sabalenka captured major titles at the Brisbane International, Miami Open, and Madrid Open, demonstrating her versatility across surfaces and conditions.

She spent the entire season ranked world number one, finishing year-end top of the WTA rankings for the second straight year. In July, she reached another historic milestone by becoming the first player since Serena Williams in 2015 to surpass 12,000 WTA ranking points.

Impressive Numbers and Record Earnings

Sabalenka ended the season with a 63–12 win-loss record, including an outstanding 23–3 record in Grand Slam matches. Her dominance was also reflected financially, as she earned a record £11 million in prize money, the highest total of her career.

Her excellence was widely recognized, with Sabalenka receiving nearly 80% of votes from international tennis media to secure the WTA’s top individual honour.

Global Profile and Growing Influence

Later this month, Sabalenka will take part in a high-profile Battle of the Sexes-style exhibition match against Nick Kyrgios, the 2022 Wimbledon runner-up. The exhibition, scheduled for 28 December, is aimed at raising the profile of women’s tennis globally, a cause Sabalenka has openly championed.

Other WTA Award Winners

Several other players were recognized at the WTA Awards for their achievements during the 2025 season:

  • Belinda Bencic was named Comeback Player of the Year after returning to competition following a 13-month break for the birth of her first child.
  • Victoria Mboko, a 19-year-old from Canada, won Newcomer of the Year after climbing from outside the world’s top 300 to world number 18.
  • Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend earned Doubles Team of the Year honours after claiming their second Grand Slam title together.
  • Amanda Anisimova was voted Most Improved Player of the Year after reaching five finals during the season.

A Landmark Year for Tennis

Sabalenka’s achievements come during a season of standout performances across both tours. Last week, Carlos Alcaraz collected three honours at the ATP Awards, including the year-end world number one title, while Jannik Sinner was voted fans’ favourite for the third consecutive year.

As women’s tennis continues to evolve, Sabalenka’s back-to-back Player of the Year awards underline her place as the sport’s defining figure—and set the standard heading into 2026.
