Nick Kenny is aiming to build on what he calls his “best year on the tour” by making a strong run at the 2026 PDC World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace.
Kenny Reflects on a Strong 2025
The 32-year-old Welshman has enjoyed a breakthrough season since regaining his professional tour card in 2023. Highlights include victories over former World Champions Peter Wright and Rob Cross on the ProTour, as well as qualifying for the World Championship for a second consecutive year. Kenny has also secured his tour card for 2026, ensuring he will continue competing at the elite level.
“It’s a bad thing to think about when you’re playing darts,” Kenny said on whether regaining his tour card relieved any pressure.
“Some of the better players are, without being disrespectful, thick isn’t the word, but they just don’t think. I’m a bit methodical, a bit of a thinker. But the best thing is not to dwell on it, because it’ll just ruin your head.”
Memorable Victory Over Van Barneveld
Kenny made headlines at last year’s tournament by defeating darts legend Raymond van Barneveld and Stowe Buntz before falling to eventual finalist Luke Humphries in the third round.
“I remember watching van Barneveld in the old BDO days. It was surreal beating him,” Kenny recalled.
“He didn’t play well, but he’s one of the top five players of all time.”
First-Round Match Against Justin Hood
Ranked 54th in the world, Kenny faces Englishman Justin Hood in the first round on Tuesday. Despite their friendly relationship, Kenny joked about their size difference:
“Justin is tiny, I’m six foot two – we had a little joke when the draw came out. It’s like little and large.”
Kenny believes his experience in previous World Championships will give him an edge in the opening round. A win could see him face world number six Danny Noppert or debutant Jurjen van der Velde in the second round.
“I’m not saying I’m going to win, but I want to play well. If I play my game and take my doubles, then I should win in my eyes,” Kenny said.
“I think Justin is actually a favourite to beat me, but I’ve got a job to do Tuesday. After that, we’ll look forward to Danny or Jurjen.”
