Cooper Flagg Makes History as Youngest NBA Player to Score 40 Points

Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg etched his name into NBA history on December 15, 2025, becoming the youngest player ever to score 40 points in a single NBA game. At just 18 years old, Flagg scored 42 points against the Utah Jazz, surpassing LeBron James’ previous record of 37 points set on December 13, 2003. Despite his historic achievement, the Mavericks fell 140-133 in an intense matchup that went into overtime.

Flagg Joins Elite Company

In addition to breaking the scoring record for an 18-year-old, Flagg became only the third teenager in NBA history to record at least 40 points, five rebounds, and five assists in a single game, joining LeBron James and Kevin Durant. The 6-foot-7 guard-forward also grabbed seven rebounds and contributed six assists, showcasing his all-around game in front of a national audience.

“Obviously, we didn’t win, so it’s tough to celebrate, but it’s still a personal success,” Flagg said after the game, icing his ankle following a minor injury in the final moments of regulation.

Rookie Milestone and Mavericks Impact

Flagg’s performance also ties the Dallas Mavericks rookie scoring record previously held by Mark Aguirre, highlighting the rookie’s rapid ascent as a central figure in the team’s offense. Flagg has been on a hot streak, averaging 25.7 points over his last seven games and demonstrating improved aggressiveness, court vision, and poise under pressure.

During the game, Flagg made a strategic play to send the match into overtime, deliberately missing a free throw that rebounded to teammate Max Christie, who was fouled with 3.9 seconds remaining. Though Flagg did not score in overtime, his determination and skill were evident throughout the contest.

Mavericks coach Jason Kidd praised the rookie: “The more time he spends on the floor, the better he gets. He displayed it all tonight.” Teammate PJ Washington echoed the sentiment, noting, “Coop was killing them the whole game. He’s a special player, and there will be a lot more to come.”

Looking Ahead

Flagg’s performance signals a promising future for the Dallas Mavericks, especially with key players like Anthony Davis sidelined due to injuries. Flagg’s ability to step up in critical moments reinforces his value as a cornerstone for the franchise moving forward.

Despite setting records, Flagg remains grounded, emphasizing growth and team success over personal accolades: “I’m focused on being present, getting better every day, and helping our team win as many games as possible,” he said.

As the Mavericks navigate the rest of the season, all eyes will be on Cooper Flagg, whose combination of scoring ability, basketball IQ, and composure suggests he is poised to become one of the NBA’s next elite stars.
