Davido Reveals How Miscommunication With Omah Lay Led to Grammy-Nominated Hit ‘With You’

Afrobeats superstar Davido has opened up on how his collaboration with Omah Lay came to life, revealing that the singer once believed Davido disliked him due to a simple misunderstanding.

Omah Lay had previously admitted that he assumed the DMW boss “hated” him until Davido played his songs during a widely watched livestream with American streamer Kai Cenat in Lagos.

The following day, Omah Lay took to social media to express his surprise at the shoutout, stating that he had always thought Davido disliked him. Davido, upon seeing the tweet, immediately reached out via direct message to ask why Omah Lay felt that way, noting that they had never even met before.

In a trending video, Davido explained that the conversation sparked a connection that eventually led to their collaboration on “With You.”

“How Omah Lay and I got together was when Kai Cenat came to Nigeria and I was driving him to the club. Then Omah Lay’s song came on and Kai asked, ‘Who is this?’ I told him, ‘This is Omah Lay—he’s hot,’” Davido said.

Following that moment, the two artists exchanged contact details, shared ideas, and recorded about four songs together. Omah Lay later selected “With You” as the standout track to release.

The song has since become one of the highlights on Davido’s fifth studio album, 5ive, and has earned a nomination for Best African Music Performance at the 2026 Grammy Awards.

Fans have praised Davido for his continued support of emerging artists and his humility, while Omah Lay has been commended for his honesty about his initial doubts.

Now celebrated as one of the most emotional tracks on 5ive, “With You” stands as proof that open communication and genuine support can turn a simple misunderstanding into a Grammy-nominated hit.
