Ogun Government Orders Fresh Selection for Vacant Awujale Stool

The Ogun State Government has nullified the ongoing selection process for the vacant Awujale stool, directing the Fusengbuwa ruling house to restart the exercise in strict compliance with extant laws.

The decision, confirmed by Prof. Fassy Yusuf, Vice Chairman of the Fusengbuwa ruling house, followed a state government review of procedural lapses that could have led to prolonged litigation. The review involved representatives of the ruling house, Ijebu Ode Local Government, and the Awujale Interregnum Administration Committee, presided over by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat.

The stool became vacant in July 2025 after the passing of Oba Sikiru Adetona, who reigned for 65 years. Initially, over 60 princes had expressed interest, with the selection meeting scheduled for December 15. However, the state government halted the process due to non-compliance with the 2021 Obas and Chiefs Law and the 1957 Chieftaincy Declaration.

In a recent development, the Fidipote ruling house, next in line under the rotational order, notified the local government of its intention to take over the process, citing the Fusengbuwa’s failure to present candidates within the 14-day statutory period. The Fidipote family scheduled a general meeting for December 20, 2025, to screen and vote for eligible candidates before forwarding names to the kingmakers.

Commissioner Hamzat clarified that the state government views the selection process as not yet commenced and any letters from ruling houses will be duly considered.
