Osun Government Confirms Banditry Attack, Launches Military-Backed Rescue Operation

The Osun State Government has confirmed a bandit attack in Ora Igbomina, a border community in Ifedayo Local Government Area, and said a military-backed rescue and protection operation has been ongoing for the past three days.

Governor Ademola Adeleke, in a statement following an emergency State Security Council meeting in Osogbo, described the incident as a “serious security breach” despite preemptive precautions implemented over the past three months. He assured residents that the state government is working closely with security agencies to rescue victims and prevent future attacks, particularly in border communities.

“From the moment of the unfortunate incident, our security forces—including the police, army, and DSS—launched rescue and protection operations. A delicate operation is ongoing, and we do not want to jeopardize its integrity,” the governor stated.

The government plans to strengthen security logistics with the deployment of refurbished armored tanks, additional patrol vehicles, and an enhanced joint security patrol program. Governor Adeleke also directed closer coordination between the Osun Amotekun Corps and the Nigeria Police, warning that working in silos will no longer be tolerated.

Residents were urged to limit nighttime activities during the festive season to reduce vulnerability to criminal attacks.

According to local accounts, gunmen stormed the town on Monday night, kidnapping a former customs officer and killing one man who was ambushed while working on his farm. The victim’s 10-year-old son reportedly ran into the town to alert residents.

Governor Adeleke expressed sympathy for the victims and reiterated the state’s commitment to protecting lives and property while ensuring full Amotekun operations resume under the new guidelines.
