Hollie Davidson to Become First Woman Referee in Men’s Six Nations

Scottish referee Hollie Davidson will make history as the first woman to officiate a men’s Six Nations match when Ireland host Italy on 14 February 2026. The 33-year-old has already broken multiple barriers in rugby and is widely regarded as one of the sport’s leading referees.

Davidson’s Trailblazing Career

Davidson became Scottish Rugby’s first full-time female referee in 2017 and has continued to achieve landmark milestones, including being the first woman to referee a New Zealand men’s Test in November 2025, when New Zealand defeated Wales 52-26 in Cardiff.

She has officiated two Women’s World Cup finals and oversaw the 2025 European Challenge Cup final between Bath and Lyon, cementing her reputation as one of the top referees in international rugby.

Six Nations Appointment

In addition to taking charge of the Ireland vs Italy match, Davidson will serve as an assistant referee for the final game of the 2026 Six Nations, France vs England, in Paris on 14 March.

Davidson commented on the historic appointment:

“Refereeing in the Guinness Six Nations is a massive honour and a match I’m really looking forward to. To be the first woman to referee in the tournament is obviously a proud moment and an achievement I’ll properly be able to reflect on in years to come.”

Impact on Rugby

Davidson’s appointment represents a significant step forward for gender equality in rugby officiating, inspiring female referees and players around the world. Her presence at the highest level of men’s international rugby highlights the increasing recognition of women in roles traditionally dominated by men.

The match between Ireland and Italy is now highly anticipated, not only for the on-field action but also as a landmark event for the sport.
