Tuchel’s Warning to Rashford: “Don’t End Your Career Thinking What Could Have Been”
England boss Thomas Tuchel has issued a heartfelt warning to Marcus Rashford, saying the 27-year-old must make the right choices to avoid finishing his career with regrets.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of England’s crucial World Cup qualifier against Latvia in Riga, Tuchel said Rashford possesses world-class ability but must “prove it consistently” at both club and international level.
“It’s not a question of talent,” Tuchel told reporters. “It’s a question of whether he can prove the point at club and international level. Otherwise, he will be disappointed in ten years at what could have been.”
Rashford, currently on a season-long loan at Barcelona from Manchester United, has made an encouraging start in Spain — scoring three goals and providing five assists in 10 games across all competitions.
Rashford’s Revival in Spain
After a difficult spell at Manchester United, Rashford has rediscovered his confidence under Hansi Flick at Barcelona. The forward, who also netted twice in the Champions League against Newcastle United, appears rejuvenated in a new environment.
Tuchel praised Rashford’s improved form but emphasized that potential alone won’t define his legacy.
“He can be one of the best in the world,” said Tuchel. “The quality I see in training — finishing with both legs, strong in the air, explosive pace — there are no limits. But potential is a dangerous word in high-level sports. You must reach your personal best consistently.”
Barcelona have an option to sign Rashford permanently for £30 million in 2026, and Flick has already described the Englishman as “unbelievable” for his commitment and attitude.
The Long Road Back to England’s Starting XI
Rashford’s return to the national team came after more than a year away, with his last England appearance dating back to March 2024. Despite doubts over his form and discipline, Tuchel recalled him to the squad seven months ago, impressed by his performances at Aston Villa, where Rashford spent a successful loan spell last season.
The England manager has made it clear that Rashford’s renewed focus could mark a turning point in his career — if he maintains consistency.
“He’s 27 — still young enough to make the right decisions,” Tuchel said. “He has everything to become elite again, but it depends on his daily work and mentality.”

Tuchel’s remarks came ahead of England’s final World Cup qualifying match against Latvia, where victory would guarantee their place at next summer’s tournament in Mexico, Canada, and the United States.
England remain unbeaten under Tuchel in their qualification campaign. Recent results — including a 5-0 demolition of Serbia in Belgrade and a 3-0 win over Wales — have showcased signs of progress under the German coach’s demanding philosophy.
“It’s a pleasure to coach and to watch this team,” Tuchel said. “The effort against Wales was outstanding — they couldn’t escape their own half. The team is hungry, and that hunger is what will define our standards.”

Since replacing Gareth Southgate as England manager on 1 January 2025, Tuchel’s tenure has faced scrutiny. Early performances — such as a lacklustre 1-0 win over Andorra and a 3-1 friendly defeat to Senegal — led to criticism from fans and pundits.
