The New Orleans Saints have rewarded kicker Charlie Smyth with a new three-year contract and promoted him to the team’s full 53-man roster. The 24-year-old from County Down, Northern Ireland has quickly established himself as a clutch performer for the Saints, highlighted by a game-winning field goal against the Carolina Panthers last week.
Smyth Elevated to 53-Man Roster
Smyth had previously been part of the Saints’ practice squad under the NFL’s International Player Pathway programme after signing his first deal in March 2024. Following three practice squad elevations this season, NFL rules required him to be added to the active roster to participate in future games.
“Charlie has proven his value on the field,” Saints management said in a statement. “Elevating him to the full roster rewards his performance and ensures he can continue contributing to the team’s success.”
Smyth is set to make his fourth consecutive NFL start against the New York Jets at the Superdome this Sunday.
Rapid Rise to Starting Kicker
The former Gaelic footballer and Down goalkeeper replaced veteran Blake Grupe, who was waived by the Saints and later signed by the Indianapolis Colts. Smyth beat Cade York for the starting role and immediately made an impact in his NFL debut against the Miami Dolphins, converting a 56-yard field goal and executing a successful onside kick.
Since then, Smyth has featured prominently in wins over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers, including a dramatic 46-yard field goal in his home debut with six seconds remaining.
Impressive Early Stats
In just three NFL starts, Smyth has successfully converted nine of ten kicking attempts, demonstrating both consistency and poise under pressure. His accurate long-range kicking and ability to perform in clutch moments have earned praise from coaches, teammates, and fans alike.
From Gaelic Football to the NFL
Smyth’s journey from Gaelic football in Northern Ireland to professional American football is a testament to his skill, adaptability, and work ethic. His development through the NFL’s International Player Pathway programme highlights the league’s growing commitment to discovering talent globally.
“The transition has been incredible,” Smyth said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity and excited to keep improving with the Saints as part of the active roster.”
Next Challenge: Jets at the Superdome
Smyth and the Saints will look to continue their winning form against the New York Jets, with his role as a reliable kicker central to their scoring strategy. Fans will be watching closely to see if the Northern Irish star can maintain his near-perfect start to the NFL season.
