The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) at the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo State, has raised concerns over alleged threats to the life of its Chairman, Comrade Oluwaseyi Gbenga Abayomi, reportedly linked to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ebunoluwa Aderonke Adejuyigbe.
In a petition submitted to the Nigeria Police Force, the union claimed that Abayomi has been receiving death threats and is being trailed in Ondo City and Akure, where he resides. The union alleged that the Vice Chancellor incited staff against union leaders during a town hall meeting held on November 20, 2025, making false allegations regarding the union’s position on certain appointments and salary payments.
SSANU described the alleged threats as a response to its push for compliance with government directives and university regulations. The union also requested police protection for Abayomi and other leaders, noting that the Bursar of the university and his associates might be involved in the intimidation.
“The Vice Chancellor publicly incited staff allegedly employed between January and March 2025 against the Union leaders, claiming the Union resisted payment of over eight months’ salaries and demanded termination of appointments. These allegations are false,” the petition read.
The union emphasised that its actions were aimed at ensuring justice, adherence to university regulations, and proper implementation of government directives as outlined in the relevant White Paper and the university’s conditions of service.
SSANU further noted that the Vice Chancellor had also publicly criticised union leaders over the reappointment of the Director of Gender Health and Equality, Professor Augustinah Duyilemi, which the union described as an illegal appointment exceeding contract limits.
The union called on relevant authorities to investigate the threats and ensure the safety of its leaders, while urging university management to comply with regulations and directives to prevent further escalation.
