Kylian Mbappé Equals Cristiano Ronaldo’s Real Madrid Calendar-Year Goal Record

Mbappé Matches Ronaldo’s 59-Goal Record on Birthday

Kylian Mbappé marked his 27th birthday in spectacular fashion by equalling Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of 59 goals in a single calendar year for Real Madrid. The milestone came during a hard-fought La Liga victory over Sevilla, as Real maintained pressure on league leaders Barcelona.

Real Madrid took the lead in the 38th minute when Jude Bellingham rose above Lucien Agoume to head home from a Rodrygo free-kick, sending the ball into the top corner. Sevilla pressed for an equaliser but found their task complicated after Marcao received a second yellow card following a reckless challenge on Bellingham.

Mbappé sealed the win in the 86th minute, converting a penalty after Rodrygo was fouled by Juanlu Sanchez, marking the 59th goal of the year and matching Ronaldo’s 2013 record.

“It’s a special day because it’s my birthday,” Mbappé told Real Madrid TV.
“To finish the year with a positive result and equal a record set by Cristiano, my idol, is incredible. It’s an honour to do what he did.”

Mbappé’s Frustrations Before the Record Goal

The France international endured a challenging evening prior to his milestone goal. He failed to register a shot on target in the first half and saw his early second-half attempt saved by Odysseas Vlachodimos.

Sevilla’s Isaac Romero also threatened on the counter-attack but was twice denied by Thibaut Courtois. Mbappé went close again, curling a shot beyond the far post and later hitting the crossbar with a header.

Despite these near misses, Mbappé’s late penalty allowed him to match Ronaldo’s feat, even though a potential second penalty — which could have seen him break the record — was overturned after a VAR review.

Comparing Mbappé and Ronaldo at 27

Mbappé marked his record-equaling goal with Ronaldo’s famous ‘Siu’ celebration, paying tribute to the Portuguese legend. But how do their statistics truly compare?

  • Cristiano Ronaldo (2013): 59 goals in 50 games, 7 hat-tricks, 14 assists.
  • Kylian Mbappé (2025): 59 goals in 59 games, 5 assists, 2 fewer hat-tricks.

At age 27, Ronaldo had scored 272 goals and provided 106 assists (378 total goal contributions) in 531 appearances. Mbappé, by contrast, has amassed 410 goals and 176 assists, amounting to 586 goal contributions in 544 matches — surpassing Ronaldo in overall output.

“It’s an honour for me,” Mbappé said.
“I wanted to give Ronaldo a wink because he’s always been kind to me. I shared the celebration with him because he was my idol, and now he’s a friend.”

Real Madrid Stay on Track

Mbappé’s record-breaking year underscores his importance to Real Madrid’s attacking line-up as they pursue the La Liga title. With goals from Bellingham, Rodrygo, and Mbappé, Los Blancos continue to put pressure on Barcelona in the title race.

His achievement not only cements him as one of the top forwards in world football but also strengthens his case as one of the greatest Real Madrid goalscorers of all time, joining the elite company of Ronaldo and other club legends.
