Manchester United Could Make January Signing as Neves and Semenyo Links Emerge

Manchester United could be active in the January transfer window, according to head coach Ruben Amorim, as the club looks to strengthen key areas in the squad. With midfield and left wing-back positions flagged as priorities, United are reportedly considering moves for Ruben Neves, Conor Gallagher, and Antoine Semenyo.

United’s Financial Position and Transfer Strategy

Despite taking on an additional £105 million in debt to fund their summer signings, Manchester United continues to face financial pressures, with November accounts revealing total debt of £1.1 billion. The club spent £230 million on new players last summer, but weaknesses in Amorim’s squad have been evident, particularly in central midfield and the left wing-back role.

Amorim confirmed the possibility of January activity, emphasizing long-term planning:

“I don’t know what is going to happen, but it’s possible we can do something – we will see. The only thing we know is that we would only try to bring players we think are going to be the future. It’s not going to be to save something in this moment.”

Ruben Neves and Conor Gallagher: Premier League Experience

Ruben Neves, currently at Saudi Pro-League side Al Hilal, could be a prime target. The former Wolves captain, who made 177 Premier League appearances scoring 21 goals, is reportedly willing to accept a reduced salary to return to England.

Conor Gallagher is another Premier League-experienced midfielder who could be available in January. Both players fit the profile Amorim values, having already demonstrated Premier League readiness, similar to Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, who have been key for United this season.

Antoine Semenyo: A Potential £65 Million Signing

On the attacking front, Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo has been linked with a move to Old Trafford. The 25-year-old Ghanaian international impressed in a 4-4 draw at Old Trafford earlier this month and has a contract clause allowing him to leave for £65 million if triggered early in January.

United faces competition from Liverpool, Manchester City, and Tottenham, but Amorim remains confident in finding a solution that fits his tactical approach. Semenyo could either be deployed permanently as a left wing-back or provide an attacking option similar to Amad Diallo on the right.

Tactical Adjustments Amid Africa Cup of Nations

The absence of key players Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, and Noussar Mazraoui due to Africa Cup of Nations commitments could force Amorim to alter his preferred formation. While many have called for a switch to a back four with three central midfielders, Amorim remains cautious but open:

“If we have to change to a back four, we change to a back four.”

This flexibility could also open the door for Kobbie Mainoo, the 20-year-old England midfielder, to see more first-team opportunities if he remains in the squad or is loaned out.

Long-Term Vision Drives Transfer Decisions

Amorim emphasized that any January signings will focus on the club’s long-term development, rather than short-term fixes:

“We will try to bring in now – and at the end of the season – players that are perfect for our future.”

This approach aligns with Manchester United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s vision of reducing excessively high wages, as seen with Neves’ potential return, while ensuring that young talents like Mainoo are not hindered in their development.

What This Means for Manchester United

  • Central midfield: Potential reinforcements include Ruben Neves or Conor Gallagher to strengthen the spine.
  • Left wing-back: Semenyo could provide attacking support, balancing United’s tactical flexibility.
  • Long-term strategy: Any January deals will focus on sustainable squad growth rather than short-term cover.
  • Africa Cup of Nations impact: Tactical adjustments may be necessary to cope with player absences.

Manchester United supporters will be watching closely as January approaches, hoping Amorim can secure high-quality signings that address the squad’s weaknesses while shaping the team for future success.
