“Marriage Is Overrated” — Actress Yvonne Jegede Shares Candid View

Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede has spoken openly about her views on marriage, describing the institution as overrated, while stressing that she remains open to remarriage if it happens naturally.

The 42-year-old actress made the remarks during a recent interview on a Lagos-based radio station, where she explained that she is neither actively searching for marriage nor completely closed to it.

According to Jegede, life experiences have taught her to avoid making absolute decisions when it comes to relationships.

“I am open to remarriage if it comes, but I am not looking for it. I have learnt not to say ‘never’,” she said.

The actress reflected on how many long-term relationships tend to collapse shortly after marriage, suggesting that the pressure that comes with the marital label often changes relationship dynamics.

“I think marriage is overrated. A lot of people who dated for 10 to 15 years got married and broke up within two to three years. Sometimes, you wonder why such couples didn’t just remain unmarried,” she noted.

According to her, the introduction of marriage sometimes breeds intolerance, expectations, and societal pressure that were previously absent.

“When they add the marriage tag, a lot of intolerance gets in the way,” she explained.

Jegede further suggested that love, companionship, and emotional stability matter more than formalising a relationship, adding that cohabitation can sometimes offer peace without the pressures attached to marriage.

“I think it is better to find who you love and just cohabit with them,” she added.

The actress’ comments have since sparked conversations online, with many Nigerians sharing mixed reactions about marriage, commitment, and modern relationships.
