“If I Had Known the Title Would Cause an Issue, I’d Have Changed It” — Ini Edo Apologises to CAN

Nollywood actress Ini Edo became emotional during an Instagram Live session after the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) raised objections to the title of her movie, A Very Dirty Christmas, and reportedly threatened actions against the film.

Addressing her followers, the actress explained that the movie was a deeply personal project that involved months of hard work, sacrifice, and promotion. She stressed that neither she nor her team intended to offend the Christian faith.

According to Ini Edo, everyone involved in the production is Christian, and the controversy surrounding the movie title came as a shock.

“I did this movie with my sweat and my blood. We promoted it for such a long time. If anyone had raised concerns earlier, we would not have gone ahead with it. We are all Christians,” she said.

Fighting back tears, the actress offered a public apology to CAN, saying she would have reconsidered the title if she had known it would be interpreted as offensive.

“If I had known the title A Very Dirty Christmas would cause a problem, I would have changed it. CAN, I am sorry. I never meant to insult or disgrace Christians. I am a Christian too,” she added.

The incident has since triggered intense debate on social media, with many Nigerians questioning CAN’s response and comparing it to other challenges facing Christians across the country.

Some users argued that the association’s focus was misplaced, while others defended its stance, saying religious sensitivities must be respected.

As the controversy continues, the situation has drawn attention to broader conversations about creative expression, faith, and societal priorities in Nigeria.
