The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has welcomed the federal government’s immediate nationwide ban on the export of wood and related products, describing it as a strategic measure to boost the country’s furniture manufacturing sector.
Mrs. Ngozi Oyewole, Chairperson of MAN’s Wood & Wood Products/Furniture Sectoral Group, said the policy demonstrates the government’s commitment to sustainable industrial growth, local value addition, and environmental protection.
“The ban will retain critical raw materials within Nigeria, improving access to wood for processors and furniture makers, stabilizing costs, and reducing price volatility caused by export demand,” Oyewole stated.
She noted that the policy not only benefits manufacturers but also promotes local value addition, creates jobs, supports small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and encourages expansion across the wood and furniture value chain. Additionally, it is expected to enhance the competitiveness of Nigerian-made furniture domestically and strengthen the export potential of finished products.
Oyewole also highlighted the environmental advantages, saying the ban would help curb illegal logging and deforestation while encouraging sustainable forestry practices. “This Executive Order signals that Nigeria is serious about industrialization, environmental sustainability, and long-term economic resilience,” she said.
Finally, she reaffirmed MAN’s readiness to work with the Federal Government and relevant agencies to ensure the effective implementation of the policy and responsible management of forest resources.
