Rising Haircare Costs Push Some Nigerian Women to Use Detergents

With the soaring prices of shampoos, conditioners, and hair relaxers, some Nigerian women are finding alternative ways to maintain their hair at home. Economy&Lifestyle reports that many have turned to unconventional methods—including using detergents and dishwashing liquids—for hair care.

The traditional salon routine of washing, styling, and setting hair is becoming increasingly expensive, prompting cost-saving innovations. Some women with relaxed hair have resorted to homemade relaxers using kerosene and camphor mixtures, while others with natural hair are doing their own plaits at home.

Mrs. Theresa Kingsley, a small business owner, explained her decision:
“Do you know the latest price of shampoo and conditioner? A small bottle can now go for N3,000 to N20,000. I decided to use detergent or dishwashing liquid for myself and my daughter. Sometimes I use soda bar soap, which cleanses better than liquid shampoo. My daughter doesn’t visit the salon anymore because I plait her hair at home to save costs.”

Mrs. Anita Eruwa, a tailor, recounted how some hairdressers use detergents when clients want cheaper services or when their shampoo supply runs out:
“It’s not entirely their fault. Many clients want affordable services, but the cost of shampoo and rent is high. Using detergent helps them keep prices down.”

However, the practice comes with risks. Hairstylist Mr. James Dike shared a cautionary tale about a woman who washed expensive human hair wigs with detergent, damaging strands worth N1.8 million.

As haircare prices continue to rise, more Nigerians may resort to such unconventional methods, highlighting the impact of inflation on everyday personal care.
