Suspected Herdsmen Kill Poultry Farmer, Shoot Son Near Farm in Delta

A 48-year-old poultry farmer, Mr. Ukpevo Oghenekaro, was killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen near his farm along Iyede Road, after the Ughelli Township Stadium in Delta State. His son was also shot and injured during the attack, which occurred on the evening of Friday, December 20, 2025, in what is believed to have been a failed kidnapping attempt.

Sources told SaharaReporters that Oghenekaro had gone to his farm to feed his birds ahead of the Christmas season when the attack took place. After parking his vehicle, his son opened the farm gate and walked inside. Moments later, he heard his father shouting for help from outside.

The son reportedly rushed out and saw three men attempting to drag his father into the bush. When he tried to intervene with a stick, one of the attackers shot him. Despite his injuries, he pretended to be dead, allowing the assailants to overpower and abduct his father.

The son later secured the farm and alerted family members before being rushed to a hospital for treatment. On Saturday morning, operatives of the Nigeria Police Force from the Ufuoma Division, alongside family members, discovered Oghenekaro’s body approximately one kilometre from the farm.

Comrade Israel Joe, a rights activist, described the killing as “heartbreaking” and called on the Delta State Government to urgently address rising insecurity in the state, allegedly linked to Fulani herdsmen. Joe also lamented the difficulty of obtaining police clearance for the treatment of the son, citing the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act, 2017, which mandates hospitals to treat gunshot victims without a police report.

When contacted, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, confirmed that the incident had not yet been officially reported to the state police command
