Heart of Midlothian have firmly established themselves as Scottish Premiership title contenders following a 2-1 victory over Rangers, their second league win against the Ibrox side this season. The result keeps Hearts six points clear of Celtic at the top of the table, while Rangers remain fourth, 12 points behind the league leaders.
Former Scotland striker Kris Boyd described Hearts’ performance as a clear signal that “they have arrived” as serious challengers, while head coach Derek McInnes has urged his squad to maintain focus and improve, particularly with the January transfer window approaching.
Hearts’ Position at the Top of the Premiership
Hearts have not lifted the Scottish league title since 1960, but they are now arguably in their strongest position in nearly 25 years, reminiscent of their challenge in the 1997-98 season. Despite this, McInnes remains measured in his assessment of the title race.
“I certainly hope we can make this a special season,” McInnes told BBC Sport Scotland. “I expect us to get better as we go along. We just want the games to get bigger and bigger, and for Hearts to stay relevant, we need to keep chalking off wins.”
Hearts have been prolific in front of goal, scoring in 16 of their 18 Premiership matches, more than any other team in the division. Scotland striker Lawrence Shankland, the club’s top scorer with nine goals, netted the second goal against Rangers and stressed the importance of focusing on their own performance rather than the league table.
“As soon as you start looking elsewhere, that can cause problems,” Shankland said. “As long as you focus on getting three points every week, you’ll be in a good place.”
Praise from Pundits and Players
Kris Boyd declared Hearts’ arrival as title contenders after their dominant run, saying, “This Hearts team is there – they have arrived! They are going to go all the way. Rangers are out of it.”
Former Tynecastle midfielder Ryan Stevenson highlighted the squad’s belief and momentum following a strong sequence of results, including victories over Celtic, Falkirk, and Rangers.
“The changing room belief would never have left,” Stevenson said. “Everything is so positive. They will have to withstand pressure, especially with the upcoming derby against Hibs at Easter Road.”
McInnes: Improving Even at the Top
Despite their league position, McInnes insists Hearts can still improve. “I am always hearing we are only at the top of the league because teams are not as good as they normally are,” he said. “But our actual points tally is around where a team at the top of the table should be. I think there are more wins in us.”
The coach is clear that maintaining consistency, especially in key fixtures, will be vital to staying in contention for the Premiership title.
Focus on the Upcoming Edinburgh Derby
Hearts now turn their attention to the Edinburgh derby against Hibernian, with the squad confident after their current run. Shankland described the weekly challenges as “enjoyable” and “good pressure,” which the players are thriving under.
With a blend of confidence, belief, and scoring prowess, Hearts are now firmly in the Premiership title conversation, though McInnes emphasizes that continued focus and improvement will be essential if they are to secure the club’s first league triumph in 65 years.
