Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has handed over keys to the first beneficiaries of the Greater TAF City housing project, marking a strategic effort to decongest Port Harcourt and stimulate economic growth in new urban districts.
The 1,000-unit Phase 1, located along Obirikwere-Airport Road, represents a cornerstone of Fubara’s urban planning vision to transition Rivers State into a high-income state by expanding development corridors beyond the city centre. Partnering with TAF Africa Global Limited, the project aims to ensure that Rivers State is no longer viewed as a “one-city state,” accommodating a growing population while improving quality of life.
Fubara noted that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s housing agenda, emphasizing that when all 20,000 units are completed—including federal contributions—housing shortages in the state will be significantly reduced. He also highlighted the link between housing and public safety, asserting that adequate housing reduces crime by addressing basic needs.
The Governor acknowledged the legal and bureaucratic challenges encountered during the project’s inception, including over 90 lawsuits, but affirmed that the administration overcame these obstacles to advance the vision for sustainable urban growth.
Beneficiaries have been urged to commence development immediately to accelerate the growth of the area. Fubara assured continued government support to TAF Africa Global in delivering all 20,000 units, primarily targeted at middle-income earners.
TAF Africa Global Managing Director, Mustapha Njie, praised the Governor’s support and highlighted the project’s international recognition. The Greater TAF City, spanning 1,000 hectares, is a master-planned, mixed-use community featuring:
- Affordable homes ranging from 2-bedroom bungalows to 4-bedroom duplexes
- Independent power generation with integrated solar energy
- Water and sewage reticulation
- Paved roads and extensive green spaces
Njie noted that the project’s Public-Private Partnership model earned the African Union for Housing Finance’s award for “Most Innovative PPP in Affordable Housing in Africa” in Zanzibar last year. He emphasized that the first 1,000 homes are just the beginning of a broader legacy of sustainable development, thriving businesses, and flourishing communities.
