A Liverpool spectator has denied racially abusing Bournemouth striker Antoine Semenyo during a Premier League match at Anfield on 15 August.
The incident occurred during Liverpool’s first home game of the season, in which Semenyo scored two goals. The match referee, Anthony Taylor, stopped play in the 29th minute, and a man was ejected from the stadium following reports of racial abuse.
Court Proceedings
Mark Mogan, 47, from Templehill Close, Dovecot, appeared in Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on Monday. He pleaded not guilty to an offence of racially aggravated disorderly behaviour against Semenyo.
Mogan spoke only to confirm his identity and enter his plea. His trial is scheduled for 22 April 2026, and Semenyo is expected to attend the proceedings.
As part of his bail conditions, Mogan must not contact Semenyo directly or indirectly, including via social media. He is also banned from attending any regulated football grounds until the case concludes.
Club and FA Response
Liverpool Football Club said it was aware of the allegation in August and emphasized that it “condemns racism and discrimination in all forms”, adding that such behaviour “has no place in society, or football.”
The Football Association (FA) said it was “concerned” about the reported racial abuse and confirmed that it would ensure “appropriate action” is taken.
Background
The alleged abuse took place at Anfield during Bournemouth’s match against Liverpool, a game notable for Semenyo’s two-goal performance. The case highlights ongoing concerns about racism in football and the measures clubs and authorities are taking to protect players and fans.
