Celtic Women’s team have announced Grant Scott as their new head coach, following the departure of Elena Sadiku, who has taken over as manager at Swedish side BK Häcken. The move marks a significant shift in Scottish women’s football as both coaches have a proven track record in the Scottish Women’s Premier League (SWPL).
Elena Sadiku’s Historic Impact at Celtic
Sadiku, 32, joined Celtic in January 2024 following the exit of Fran Alonso and quickly made her mark. In her first six months, she guided Celtic to their first-ever SWPL title, establishing the club as a major force in Scottish women’s football. Under her leadership, Celtic also qualified for the Champions League group stages for the first time, narrowly losing to Chelsea before facing tough defeats against Real Madrid.
However, the following season proved more challenging. Celtic struggled in the latter stages of the league campaign, ultimately finishing fourth, 15 points behind champions Hibernian. Despite the challenges, Sadiku’s contribution to the club is celebrated as “historic” by Celtic officials.
Grant Scott’s Appointment at Celtic
Grant Scott, former Hibernian head coach, takes over at Celtic with a strong track record. He led Hibernian to their first league title in 18 years last season, showcasing his ability to guide competitive teams to success.
“It is a huge honour to join Celtic, and I look forward to carrying on the great work at the club, pushing forward and bringing even more success to Celtic,” Scott said.
Scott highlighted the club’s new Barrowfield Training Centre, praising the facilities for providing the women’s team and academy players the “best possible environment to train and come to work each day.”
“I have experience of bringing success to clubs, and this is what we will strive for again—to ensure Celtic can be at the very top of the women’s game,” he added.
Current SWPL Context
At the time of the coaching change, Celtic are fourth in the SWPL, seven points behind leaders Glasgow City, while Scott leaves Hibernian in fifth, six points behind his new side. Celtic chief executive Michael Nicholson thanked Sadiku for her achievements and welcomed Scott as the ideal candidate to lead the next chapter of Celtic Women’s football.
Sadiku also expressed her gratitude to the fans: “To the Celtic fans, thank you for your support. Home and away, you were with us at every step. Celtic will always be part of my journey, and I wish everyone at the club every success in the future.”
Looking Ahead
With Grant Scott at the helm, Celtic aim to reclaim their position at the top of Scottish women’s football. The appointment represents both continuity and ambition, as the club invests in its facilities and talent to challenge Glasgow City, Hibernian, and other SWPL rivals in the coming seasons.
